Brooklyn
based artist John Mitchell is colonizing a planet of his imagination and
traveling there through the crafts of drawing, printmaking, model building,
animation, and painting.
The process begins with improvisational drawings that are developed, redrawn,
and further refined through the medium of copper plate etchings. This
two-dimensional work informs three-dimensional models that are made from
various materials including Styrofoam, foam latex, articulated aluminum
and steel armatures, clay, vacuum formed plastic, wood, plaster, and fiberglass.
Stop motion animated shorts are made from the models and then all of this
information becomes subject matter for John’s paintings.
These things are like artifacts from a distant alien planet and through
them, we get to go there too.
