Joy Kennedy
Joy
Kennedy is a documentary and fine art photographer who co-runs Open Shutter
Photography in Charlotte, North Carolina. Working primarily in digital
formats, she endeavors to capture - or create - living images. Her documentary
work includes photostories about rodeo cowboys, urban playgrounds, Alzheimer’s
patients, and precocious children. In her fine art work, she seeks for
her subject matter the overlooked and everyday (paint dripping down window
glass, traffic lights, trash) or the fleeting (live music, a jay-walking
Santa). She rarely takes a literal approach to these subjects, preferring
to come at them from extremely close-up, or with her shutter wide open.
With abundant texture and shadow, the resulting images often blur the
line between photography and painting. Her work has been most recently
shown locally at Century, the Visulite Theater, and The Light Factory.
She is currently working on a commissioned documentary series on the historic
Fourth Ward section of Charlotte. |
